History Summary

The Canadian Grand Prix is an annual auto race held in Canada starting in 1961. It has been part of the Formula One World Championship since 1967.

It was first staged at Mosport Park, near Bowmanville, Ontario as a sports car event before it alternated between Mosport and Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Quebec after Formula One took over the event.

Jack Brabham


The Canadian Grand Prix with Formula One World Championship began on August 27, 1967 at the Mosport track when Australian Jack Brabham at the wheel of his Brabham Repco, won the race. 

After 1971 safety concerns led to the Grand Prix moving to Mosport. In 1978 the Canadian Grand Prix moved to its current home on Ile Notre-Dame in Montreal.
                                                                                                        
In 2005, the Canadian Grand Prix was the most watched Formula One GP in the World. The race was also the third most watched sporting event on the planet, behind the first place Super Bowl XXXIX and the UEFA Champions League Final.

A future post will be devoted to the 1967 Race as it was the first Canadian Grand Prix with Formula One santioning.

The Canadian Grand Prix was not included in the 2009 Formula 1 calender. Hence, no F1 race in North America in 2009. The 2010 edition is set to take place on June 13 th.
