IRL IZOD IndyCar Series

The IndyCar Series is the name adopted in 2003 for the premier series sanctioned by the IRL. Izod was announced as the IndyCar Series title sponsor in 2010, a deal expected to run for at least five years.

The IRL developed a consistent engine package and chassis rules which have produced some of the closest finishes in any racing series. But in later years the IndyCar Series became dominated by a few wealthy  teams, including those from the old Cart series, like Target Ganassi Racing and Team Penske.

The series initially raced exclusively on oval tracks, but in response to CART's schedule with prominence of road and street circuits these were added.

In 2005, the series added three street - road events (Watkins Glen, Infineon and St. Petersburg).

For 2007, two more road-street events (Mid-Ohio and Belle Isle) have been added.

After the 2008 merging with the ChampCar World Series, a points race at the street circuit in Edmonton, Alberta was added. Also a post-season exhibition race at Surfers Paradise, Australia .

In 2009 the Toronto , Ontario street circuit was added.
