Hamilton held his lead and all cars made it though the first corner. By lap 16, Hamilton had built up a lead of over 5 seconds over Kubica but Sutil's car caught fire and the Safety Car was brought out and there was a rush of drivers into the pits.
Raikkonen took the lead out but came to a stop because the red indicator light was on. Hamilton did not notice the red light and slid into the back of Raikkonen then Roseburg hit the back of Hamilton. Both Hamilton and Raikkonen retired from the race.
There were seven different race leaders over the next section of the race until most of the drivers each took pit stops leaving Heidfeld in the lead. Kubica overtook Heidfeld after only the first lap out of the pits.
The remainder of the race had less incidents, despite the surface of the circuit senerly degrading.
Former world champion Fernando Alonso was running in a strong third place and was pushing Heidfeld for second place before retiring after spinning off.
Kubica had built up a substantial lead over the course of the race and was never threatened while he raced towards the finish.
David Coulthard finished third to score his first points of the season and his first podium since the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix.
The win for BMW Sauber marker the first time a German constructor had won a Formula One Grand Prix since the 1962 French Grand Prix, as well as the first and only win for BMW engines since the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix which Juan Pablop Montoya won for Williams.
