Since December 1977, there had been talk of a Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and the construction of a track on the island site of the 1967 World's Fair, and April 26, 1978, the Montreal executive committee approved the plan.
After the F1 international magnates was received, construction of the track began June 20, 1978 and was completed September 22, 1978.
Quebecois Gilles Villeneuve, one of the F1 greats, was convinced that drivers would value a circuit that would make them work hard.
In 1982, Gilles Villeneuve died on the final qualifying lap for the Belgian Grand Prix. A few days later after his death, the race course in Montreal was named Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Except for 1985 and 2009 the Canadian Grand Prix has been held in Montreal.
