CANADIAN GRAND PRIX 1977 Race Mosport

October 9, 1977, the Labatt's Grand Prix of Canada was the final race at Mosport after having been there since 1971. In 1978 the Canadian Grand Prix moved to its current home on Ile Notre-Dame in Montreal.

My son Michael, who was only 4 years old at that time and I were at this race.

The following pictures and information are from the 1977 program

James Hunt had the pole in his McLaren M26, then Mario Andretti (Lotus 78), Gunnar Nilsson (Lotus 78), Ronnie Peterson (Tyrrell P34), Patrick Despailler (Tyrrell P3 etc.4), Jochen Mass (McLaren M26), John Watson (Brabham BT45B), Jody Scheckter (Wolf WR 3) etc.

Andretti made a great start and took the lead. Clay Regazzoni and John Watson were off on the 1st lap. Andretti and Hunt pulled away from Mass and Schecker. Three quarters though the race, Andetti and Hunt had lapped every car but Mass. Team mates Hunt and Mass collided and Hunt was unable to
continue; Mass did for a 4th place.

Meanwhile, Andretti had a lap over Scheckter and Depailler until his oil pressure dropped and the engine exploded. There were many retirements; only seven running at the end of the race.

In 1977, Jody Scheckter, in his Wolf Ford, was the last Mosport champion. The drivers then refused to participate in racing judging the track too dangerous.

They liked the charm of this circuit mapped out in a hilly area, but realized that it no longer responded to the security norms inherent to the Formula 1. So Mosport was abandoned.
